About The Book

“Her great desire, in fact, was to have something more solid, more tangible than love to rely upon.”

With a glamorized view of the world from the many romantic novels and beauty magazines she reads, the beautiful but morally corrupt Emma Bovary yearns for passion, wealth, and high society. But the reality is way different from her daydreams. As her marriage to the unintelligent Charles Bovary stirs discontentment in her life, she is left saying to herself—“Oh, why, dear God, did I marry him?” Consumed by her romantic fantasies, she indulges in adultery. And when even her affairs fail, the denouement is tragic. A seminal work of literary realism, Madame Bovary was Gustave Flaubert’s debut novel. Revealing the powerlessness of women and the mediocrity of the bourgeoisie, the book was considered scandalous when first published. Adapted to various art forms including films and operas, this masterpiece continues to enchant its audience.

About The Author

Born in December 1821 in Rouen, France, Gustave Flaubert was the second son of Anne Justine Caroline and Achille-Cléophas Flaubert. Flaubert began his literary career at a very young age. His first published work appeared in a review in 1837. November, a novella, completed in 1842, was his first finished work. Flaubert began working on Madame Bovary in 1850. This story of a bored, unhappy bourgeois wife, Emma Bovary, who indulges in adultery when consumed by her passionate desires and romantic fantasies, was considered scandalous. Flaubert was prosecuted for immortality. In 1857, when it appeared in book form, it was warmly received. Salammbô, his next novel, was completed in 1862. Flaubert took seven years to write his next book, Sentimental Education, which was his last complete novel. Flaubert died in 1880, aged fifty-eight, after suffering from a cerebral hemorrhage and was buried in the family vault in the cemetery of Rouen.
